CA18DET & 5spd conversion package
| COST: |
$3200
| COMMENTS: |
Lumpy had a lot of trouble finding any CA or SR packages for several months, then finally he found this package at SSS automotive. Kit included everything you need for a successful conversion: engine, transmission, piping, airbox, intercooler, engine computer, clutch etc...

| ITEM: |
Lightened flywheel and clutch package
| COST: |
$450
| COMMENTS: |
Package contained a custom 2300lbs clutch that was slightly oversized compared to the stock CA18 clutch. Flywheel is a custom aluminium one which was lightened slighty to about the weight of a stock CA16 flywheel.

7MGTE Intercooler from a MA71 Toyota Supra
| COST: |
$350 (+ $200 for custom piping when installing it)
| COMMENTS: |
Intercooler was purchased from Perth Auto Parts. I stripped and straightened all the fins before Lumpy put it in. Now although my silver intercooler looks really cool, ideally intercoolers should always be painted matted black for maximum heat dissipation.

Labour charge
| COST: |
$600
| COMMENTS: |
Not bad for a full engine and transmission conversion is it? :) Unfortunately, I am the lucky last to be quoted this price as Lumpy has since raised his prices.

| ITEM: |
Samota Pod filter
| COST: |
$39
| COMMENTS: |
I'm really happy with this purchase. The filter is a full K&N look-a-like yet I only got it for $39 brand new.

Gear Knob and boot
| COST: |
$27.72
| COMMENTS: |
Initally, we didnt think that the stock gear knob came with the car, so I went and bought a fancy one (see photos). But the new knob only lasted 2 minutes until it promptly fell off, so I went back to using a stock one which we eventually found lying around. A new gear boot was made up using $3.00 of new vinyl.

New CA18 engine mount
| COST: |
$66
| COMMENTS: |
Turns out that one of the old mounts was broken and the one that came with the package was busted as well. Lumpy says that broken CA18 engine mounts are a common occurance on S13's. New one was sourced from Perth Auto Parts.

| ITEM: |
25mm SR20DET discs and calipers
| COST: |
$330 for the pair (+ $70 for new bendix (standard) pads)
| COMMENTS: |
SR20DET brakes are a straight bolt on conversion for other Silvia's and compared to the standard 18mm CA18 discs, they make a big improvement.
| |
| ITEM: |
ARC Blow off valve
| COST: |
$100
| COMMENTS: |
Initially I opted for a stock SR20 BOV for $50 but then Lumpy offered me the ARC BOV off his mums 180SX for $100. The difference? The ARC BOV makes a little more noise - how could I resist?

ITEM: |
SALE of CA18DE
| COST: |
-$400
| COMMENTS: |
I sold my old engine to a mate who has been helping me out heaps during the conversion in terms of transportation particularly. You probably could get $800 for a CA18DE but I sold it to Chris on mates rates for his Datsun 1000 conversion! |
| |
ITEM: |
SALE of Automatic Tranmission
| COST: |
-$80
| COMMENTS: |
Can you believe it?? The first auto trans business I visited and they gave me $80 on the spot!!
| |
The Silvia in Lumpy's garage with its guts pulled out. Notice the dead drivers side engine mount we found on the car when the old DE came out. The mounts in the DET package turned out to be broken too. Glenn says it is extremely common for CA18 Silvia's to break engine mounts.
A simple shot of the front passenger side strut with the stock CA18 brakes.
The nasty old CA18DE with Auto. The engine is currently being reborn in a ~600kg Datsun 1000 with Pintara/Bluebird 5 speed tranmission.
A shot of the empty engine bay. Notice the absent engine mount.
The new CA18DET with 5 Speed transmission ready to rock!!
The infamous Glenn "Lumpy" Campbell in all his glory early in the morning. What more can I say?
Ladies and gentlemen, take a long hard look at this photo as its the only time you'll see a Commodore with a REAL engine in it!!! Thats Chris on the left and yours truely on the right.
Oh my god! What have they done to my car!!
Not only did we manage to get second in line at the PITS (with forty million people lined up behind us), but we got passed in about two minutes! Thats Cam holding the new rego papers...
A few bits and peices that are useful in a conversion. Notice however that despite popular opinion you dont need a new center consule panel shown here. I even got a new peice of leather/vinyl boot made up for three dollars.
A picture of the clutch and lightened flywheel that went into the five speed. The one pictured is the same in my car apart from the fact that the clutch here has been bonded.
Now thats better! Notice the groovy shift knob which cost me thirty odd dollars and lasted about twenty seconds until it fell off and got swapped for the OEM knob.
Finally the DET goes in! Now for the wires and pipes...
My SR20DET brakes I got for $330 from Perth Auto Parts.
The stock SR20DET brakes versus the CA18 brakes. Now they dont look all that much bigger in the photo but I swear the SR20DET brakes are heaps bigger in real life.
